Belarus to hold tender to choose partner for satellite project

Belarus is likely to hold a tender to choose a partner for a communications satellite project, Minister of Communications Nikolai Pantelei told reporters.

Negotiations with potential investors continue. It is too early to speak about the results. “Most likely we will announce a tender,” the minister said.

When asked about how much time it will take to launch a communications satellite, the minister said: “We need a minimum of two years on the procedures and three years on the launch. Thus it will take 4 or 5 years to complete the project.”

World experience shows that such satellites are quite expensive. The most expensive options cost more than €100 million, not counting the expenses on the launch. However, these satellites have about 40 communication lines. The state usually needs only a part of them. The remaining lines of communication can be leased.
