Trust fund to foster privatization in Belarus

A trust fund will be set up in Belarus soon to foster privatization processes, World Bank Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova Martin Raiser said.

The trust fund will enable the government to hire advisors to help choose companies to sell to a strategic investor and to help with the sale itself, explained Martin Raiser.

He said the World Bank has no quantity targets in mind. “We aim to help create a quality transparent privatization process,” stressed Martin Raiser.

According to the World Bank Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, negotiations with the Belarusian government are in progress to determine principles for the procedure as well as principles for choosing the companies that will be privatized using the procedure.

“Once the principles are agreed, the trust fund will be able to start working and the government will be able to start seeking advisors. I hope that we will be able to announce the completion of the process soon enough. I think we have advanced rather far in this area,” said Martin Raiser.
