Belarus to invite foreign investors to create center for electronics, laser technologies

Foreign investors will be invited to take part in the project to set up a center for microelectronics and laser technologies in Belarus, Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee of Belarus Igor Voitov told media on 12 May.

Various ways to finance the project are being considered, including the possibility of attracting venture capital investments from foreign companies. “There are proposals for venture capital financing of several enterprises that will be part of the new center. They provide for various sources, including those from Russia,” said Igor Voitov. He did not specify the amount of investments the project will require.

The feasibility study for creating the new center is being prepared along with a draft decree to guide the establishment of the center. The government and then the head of state are expected to pass the decree in H2 2011, said the official.

The center for microelectronics and laser technologies will allow Belarus to considerably increase the export of high-tech products. “Close attention is paid to the development of microelectronics, optical and laser technologies in our country. We take orders from many countries, including Japan, Korea, the USA, and Russia,” said Igor Voitov. “We, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and several defense enterprises, have seriously advanced in these areas. We believe it is necessary to set up the new organizational body in order to further encourage the development of these enterprises. I think the project will turn out to be very interesting”.
