Polotsk is to participate in the new EU project on sustainable energy development

The project is implemented by the EU program "CIUDAD: Cooperation and dialogue in the field of urban development" and brings together six partners from five countries: Germany, Spain, Belarus, Morocco and France.

SURE project is designed for 2.5 years; its budget is around 620 thousand euros. Leading partner of the project is the German city of Friedrichshafen twin sister of Polotsk. New initiative aims to promote sustainable energy development of two cities - Polotsk and Salé (Morocco) through their accession to the Covenant of Mayors. City, entering into the Covenant of Mayors, agree to implement the EU strategy, known as "20-20-20". The purpose of this strategy is to achieve significant improvements in the field of sustainable energy development by 2020: to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20%, increase the share of alternative energy sources to 20% and improve energy efficiency by 20%. At this point the text of the Covenant of Mayors is signed by the heads of 2,181 European cities and cities from neighbouring countries. It is planned that the city of Polotsk will become the first Belarusian participants of this agreement.

The conference will bring together representatives of regional and local authorities of Belarus, Morocco, Germany and Spain, ministries and agencies, the European Commission delegation in Belarus, as well as institutions, organizations and experts working in the field of energy. During the conference a plan for sustainable energy development of Polotsk will be designed. Development and implementation of such a plan is a prerequisite, which all parties to the Covenant of Mayors must fulfil. Spanish city of Murcia, one of the partners of the project, which has already signed the Covenant of Mayors will share its experience with the Belarusian participants.
